I deleted an xp account and files.  When I start up xp, it gives me a box with "can't log onto this acct., check name and password."  And it is the acct. I deleted.  If I cancel the box it allows me to put in another account name. 
Any help appreciatd.

There is a feature in Windows XP that allows you to have it automatically log in to windows under a specified user name, using a specified password, and if you have this feature turned on, deleting the account does not remove it from this feature.

To turn it off (or supply different Login Credentials for it to automatically log on with) Open the Start Menu, and click Run, then type "control userpasswords2" (without quotes) and check the box that says "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer." (or  if you want to supply different login credentials, uncheck it, click Apply, and then check it again, when clicking Apply/OK it will then ask you for a new User Name and Password to use.)

Sorry about having posted this nearly 2 years after your question, you probably have solved it by now, or maybe even moved on to a new computer, but i figure that maybe it will help someone else who runs into the same problem if it won't help you.
